Never QUIT..

"When things go wrong as they sometimes will,

When the road you're trudging seems all up hill,

When the funds are low and the debts are high

And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,

When care is pressing you down a bit,

Rest if you must, but don't you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns,

As every one of us sometimes learns,

And many a failure turns about

When he might have won had he stuck it out;

Don't give up though the pace seems slow--

You may succeed with another blow,

Success is failure turned inside out--

The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,

And you never can tell how close you are,

It may be near when it seems so far;

So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit--

It's when things seem worst that you must not quit."

Visualise in the Right Way dear!

visualisation

The four important  parts of visualization

Did you know that there are four parts of visualization that you can learn and practice to assure that you use this incredible power to its best advantage all the days of your life.

How Often?

The first aspect of visualization is frequency, the number of times that you visualize a particular goal as achieved of yourself performing in an excellent way in a particular event or circumstance. The more frequently you repeat a clear mental picture of your very best performance or result, the more rapidly it will appear as part of your reality.

How Long?

The second element of visualization is the duration of the mental image, the length of time that you can hold the picture in your mind each time you replay it. When you deeply relax, you can often hold a mental picture of yourself performing at your best for several seconds, and even several minutes. The longer you can hold your mental picture, the more deeply it will be impressed into your subconscious mind and the more rapidly it will express itself in your subsequent performance.

How Clearly?

The third element of visualization is vividness. There is a direct relationship between how clearly you can see your desired goal or result in your mind and how quickly it comes into your reality. This element of visualization is what explains the powers of the Law of Attraction and the Law of Correspondence. The vividness of your desire directly determines how quickly it materializes in the world around you. Here is an interesting point. When you set a new goal for yourself, your image or picture of this goal will usually be vague and fuzzy. But the more often you write it, review it, and repeat it mentally, the clearer it becomes for you. Eventually, it will become crystal clear. At that point, the goal
will suddenly appear in your world exactly as you imagined it.

How Intensely?

The fourth element of visualization is intensity, the amount of emotion that you attach to your visual image. In reality, this is the most important and powerful part of the visualization process. Sometimes, if your emotion is intense enough and your visual image is clear enough, your goal will immediately come true.

Of course, the elements of frequency, duration, vividness, and intensity can help you or hurt you. Like nature, the power of visualization is neutral. Like a two-edged sword, it can cut in either direction. It can either make you a success or make you a failure. Visualization brings you whatever you vividly and intensely imagine, whether good or bad.

Action Exercise

Continually feed your mind with clear, exciting, emotional pictures. Remember, your imagination is your preview of lifes coming attractions.

I Appreciate You

To appreciate means to recognize the significance, quality, or magnitude of.

(Appreciate freedom)

To be fully aware of or sensitive to; realize:

(I appreciate your problems)

To be thankful or show gratitude for:

(I appreciate your help)

To admire greatly; value

To raise in value or price.

If you hear these words from your  friend, he/she  was not appreciating you for something youdid or said to or for him/her personally or professionally. He was not appreciating a particular problem that you had or appreciating your help on a matter.

I appreciate YOU is what it means

That means You are appreciated, You are admired greatly, You are valued, and You are raised in value. He recognizes the significance, quality and magnitude of you, and who you are. He is thankful and shows gratitude for you.

As you absorb the power of these three words and allowed them to penetrate and saturate your inner being, consider who told you these. One of the many life lessons is to always consider the message and the source of messages that enter into your life constantly. Did they have any idea how powerfully profound and life-changing this one short statement would be?

Remember the definition of appreciate. You tend to invest in the things that you find value in. Our Heavenly Father also invests heavily in us.

Feel the power of "I APPRECIATE YOU."

Tell someone or many, and mean it.

Dip into your rich resources and invest in them; whatever those resources may be.

I APPRECIATE YOU!
And yes one more thing: when did You say this someone last?
DO IT NOW and Enjoy the pleasure!

Be A Lake

The old Master instructed the unhappy young man to put a handful of salt in a glass of water and then to drink it.

"How does it taste?" the Master asked.

"Awful," spat the apprentice.

The Master chuckled and then asked the young man to take another handful of salt and put it in the lake.

The two walked in silence to the nearby lake and when the apprentice swirled his handful of salt into the lake,

the old man said, "Now drink from the lake."

As the water dripped down the young man's chin, the Master asked, "How does it taste?"

"Good!" remarked the apprentice. "Do you taste the salt?" asked the Master. "No," said the young man.

The Master sat beside this troubled young man, took his hands, and said, "The pain of life is pure salt; no more, no less.

The amount of pain in life remains the same, exactly the same. But the amount we taste the 'pain' depends on the container we put it into.

So when you are in pain, the only thing you can do is to enlarge your sense of things .....

Stop being a glass. Become a lake!"

BOLD ,BOLDER ,BOLDEST

"When you cannot make up your mind which of two evenly balanced courses of action you should take, choose the bolder." - General W.J. Slim

Being Bold is something like a habit- an intoxicating habit.
Boldness in dealing with situations, people or our life itself is something which we acquire through taking the first step of being bold.

Yes, by being bold once- you gain the boldness of becoming bolder again.

Sometimes, we gain boldness when someone gives us the confidence for the same.
That's where training helps.. there are good trainers who can give you the support and let you overcome your fears.

Military training is actually one such training. In military , the process is simple - making the soldiers mentally tough.
Coz, only a mentally strong soldier will be able to lead the army or win the war.

Consider the same in our life too.. consider each incident of your life as a soldier who is getting trained to face any war- The WAR of Life...

all the best!

ATTITUDE- that's what they want

Recently read a news .. about importance of attitude at workplace...thought i should post it here..

At Microsoft’s Global Technical Support Centre (GTSC) in Bangalore, a team of over 1,000 engineers solve problems for the Redmond,Washington-based company’s blue-ribbon corporate customers, including the likesof the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) which runs the US’civilian space programming and GE, the engineering and financial services major.

The problems have become increasingly complex over the years and the averagetime to resolve a complaint is upwards of eight hours.  The engineers work under intense time pressure as the glitches they are solving could result in loss of business for clients.

But at the end of the year, the engineers are not being judged by how fast they solved problems or how high they were rated on customer satisfaction surveys.

Instead, performance rating is linked to much more qualitative parameters such as readiness to ask colleagues for help, the ability and willingness tolearn from the problem they were solving.  The willingness to share knowledge and doggedness and persistence in solvingproblems is also high on the desirability charts at the Bangalore unit ofthe maker of Windows software.

These changes are not unique to Microsoft. Employees are increasingly being judged on the quality of their interaction with colleagues with values such as proclivity towards collaborative behaviour and knowledge-sharing being highlyrated. Risk-taking ability is also valued.

For some companies, behaviour, rather than the ability tomeet targets, is the route to a good increment this appraisal season. And insome places like Microsoft GTSC, it is the only criterion.

“We don’t hold the frontline staff accountable to productivity any longer. Thatis only for most senior managers,” says Binu Philip, Director, Human Resourcesat Microsoft, GTSC. “Hard numbers do not show the whole picture and can bemanipulated as well,” Anandorup Ghosh, practice head for executive compensationand corporate governance at Aon Hewitt.

A Shepherd and a Consultant- Funny Story

A shepherd was herding his flock in a remote pasture when suddenly a brand-new BMW advanced out of the dust cloud towards him. The driver, a young man in a Broni suit, Gucci shoes, Ray Ban sunglasses and YSL tie, leaned out of the window and asked the shepherd,... "If I tell you exactly how many sheep you have in your flock, will you give me one?"

The shepherd looked at the man, obviously a yuppie, then looked at his peacefully-grazing flock and calmly answered, "Sure."

The yuppie parked his car, whipped out his IBM Think Pad and connected it to a cell phone, then he surfed to a NASA page on the Internet where he called up a GPS satellite navigation system, scanned the area, and then opened up a database and an Excel spreadsheet with complex formulas. He sent an email on his Blackberry and, after a few minutes, received a response. Finally, he prints out a 130 page report on his miniaturized printer then turns to the shepherd and says, ..."You have exactly 1586 sheep." "That is correct; take one of the sheep," said the shepherd. He watches the young man select one of the animals and bundle it into his car. Then the shepherd says: "If I can tell you exactly what your business is, will you give me back my animal?"

"OK, why not," answered the young man.

"Clearly, you're a consultant," said the shepherd.

"That's correct," says the yuppie, "but how did you guess that?"

"No guessing required," answers the shepherd. "You turned up here although nobody called you. You want to get paid for an answer I already knew, to a question I never asked, and you don't know crap about my business... Now give me back my dog."

Stop Complaining Yaar!- A Nice Story

 "If I had kept my mouth shut I wouldn't be here." How true! Don't jump into trouble mouth first.

Let me pose this question for you: Starting today what would happen if you changed what you said about your biggest problem, your biggest opportunity?

"Our words create our worlds," says Dean Sikes. Your words have the power to start fires or quench passion.

This story reminds me of a similar situation in a Malayalam movie - "Chinthavishtayaaya Shyamala" , in which Actor Sreenivasan enters in such a situation. The story goes like this..

A man  joined a monastery in which the monks were allowed to speak only two words every seven years. After the first seven years had passed, the new initiate met with the abbot, who asked him, "Well, what are your two words?"

"Food's bad," replied the man, who then went back to his silence.

Seven years later the clergyman asked, "What are your two words now?"

"Bed's hard," the man responded.

Seven years later - twenty-one years after his initial entry into the monastery - the man met with the abbot for the third and final time. "And what are your two words this time?" the abbot asked.

"I quit."

"Well, I'm not surprised," the cleric answered disgustedly. "All you've done since you got here is complain!"

Don't be like that man; don't be known as a person whose only words are negative. If you're a member of the "negative grapevine," resign.

Contrary to what you may have heard, talk is not cheap. Talk is powerful!

What we say is important. Our vocabulary should be filled with words of hope and dreams. Be known as someone who speaks positively.

and yes....

Doing Good to Others -A Story

A woman baked chapati for members of her family and an extra one for a hungry passerby. She kept the extra chapati on the Window-sill, for whosoever would take it away. Everyday, a hunchback came and took away the chapati.

Instead of expressing gratitude, he muttered the following words as he went his way: "The evil you do remains with you: The good you do, comes back to you!" This went on, day after day. Everyday, the hunch-back came, picked up the chapati and uttered the words: "The evil you do, remains with you: The good you do, comes back to you!" The woman felt irritated. "Not a word of gratitude," she said to herself...

"Everyday this hunchback utters this jingle! What does he mean? "One day, exasperated, she decided to do away with him. "I shall get rid of this hunchback," she said. And what did she do? She added poison to the Chapatti she prepared for him! As she was about to keep it on the window sill, her hands trembled. "What is this I am doing?" she said immediately, she threw the chapati into the fire, prepared another one and kept it on the window- sill.

As usual, the hunchback came, picked up the chapati and muttered the words: "The evil you do, remains with you: The good you do, comes back to you!" The hunchback proceeded on his way, blissfully unaware of the war raging in the mind of the woman.

Everyday, as the woman placed the chapati on the window-sill, she offered a  prayer for her son who had gone to a distant place to seek his fortune. For many months, she had no news of him.. She prayed for his safe return.

That evening, there was a knock on the door. As she opened it, she was surprised to find her son standing in the doorway.. He had grown thin and lean. His garments were tattered and torn. He was hungry, starved and weak. As he saw his mother, he said, "Mom, it's a miracle I'm here. While I was but a mile away, I was so famished that I collapsed. I would have died, but just then an old hunchback passed by. I begged of him for a morsel of food, and he was kind enough to give me a whole chapati. As he gave it to me, he said, "This is what I eat everyday: today, I shall give it to you, for your need is greater than mine!" " As the mother heard those words, her face turned pale.

She leaned against the door for support. She remembered the poisoned chapati that she had made that morning. Had she not burnt it in the fire, it would have been eaten by her own son, and he would have lost his life! It was then that she realized the significance of the words:  "The evil you do remains with you: The good you do, comes back to you!

 Do good and;  Don't ever stop doing good, even if it's not appreciated at that time."

FIVE MANTRAS WHEN YOU BECOME ANGRY!

I always wonder at how different people become angry in different ways. I mean, getting angry can be due to many reasons, but how they behave when angry changes from person to person.
Let’s take the case of some people whom I know. One person gets angry for very small reasons and makes a big fuss around it. Whereas , another person doesn’t even get angry for big reasons. This put me thinking, “why do people behave in different manner for the same stimulus?”
Well, being a psychologist myself, I know the reason pretty well. Its based on the personality, mental make up   and emotional balance of each person. (Ah!..all jargons.. I hate it.. but still , I have to use jargons so that u get a feeling that I am serious!)
Whatever it be, I know what you want to know (hmm rhyming!) . “How do I control my anger?”
Abracadabra… Shoo manthar… Let me give you the magical mantra for controlling anger! ( uhh!..do I have one?)
Actually, there isn’t a big magic .. the only magic is YOU ..yourself!
Let’s see how you can become better at controlling anger. I have made the following mantras
·         Mantra no 1: Become AWARE of your Anger-  Identify your symptoms of you becoming angry. It can range from feeling sad, pain (both physical and mental), breathlessness, shivering , throat drying ,brisk movements of hands and legs , heart beat increasing etc.
·         Mantra no 2: Once you are aware,  the next stage is to THINK . This stage requires you to actually use your brain and not your heart. THINK LOGICALLY whether this Anger is worth it. Whether the pain and physical stress you are about to experience is worth for the reason you are getting angry at.
·         Mantra no 3: This Stage is something like an “IF condition” in a flow chart. IF you feel that your anger is worth the stress you are going to take, then Go Ahead to Manthra no :5   Otherwise Go to manthra no 4
·         Mantra no 4: Once you think logically, you will understand that the emotional stress that you are going to face is more than the reason of anger , you  can divert your anger to different emotions- preferably the opposite emotion like Humour or romance.For eg: When your husband calls you a “Dog” for some small reason, you have two options- take it serious and call back him as “pig” and then continue the fight.   Or just take it lightly with a humour sense and say “Bow bow bow” and give him a hug. I am sure the fight will come to an end!
·         Mantra no 5: Sometimes, after you think, you understand that Your anger is worth it. In such cases, the next question is , “How to express your anger?” ,Now this is what I told in the beginning, depends on each person’s personality and emotional balance.

   I will write about this soon ..Keep visiting my blog

How to Identify Your Goals

ALWAYS KEEP WONDERING ...HOW TO SET GOALS?

Hey! here are seven goal-setting questions for you to ask and answer over and over again. I think, it would good to take a piece of paper and write out your answers.

Question Number One: What are your five most important values in life?

This question is intended to help you clarify what is really important to you, and by extension, what is less important, or unimportant. Once you have identified the five most important values in life for you, organize them in order of priority, from number one, the most important, through number five.

Question Number Two: What are your three most important goals in life, right now?

This is called the "quick list" method. When you only have thirty seconds to write down your three most important goals, your subconscious mind sorts out your many goals quickly. Your top three will just pop into your conscious mind. With only thirty seconds, you will be as accurate as if you had thirty minutes.

Question Number Three: What would you do, how would you spend your time, if you learned today that you only had six months to live?

This is another value questions to help you clarify what is really important to you. When your time is limited, even if only in your imagination, you become aware of who and what you really care about.

Question Number Four: What would you do if you won a million dollars cash, tax free, in the lottery tomorrow?

How would you change your life? What would you buy? What would you start doing, or stop doing? This is really a question to help you decide what you'd do if you had all the time and money you need, and if you had virtually no fear of failure at all.

Question Number Five: What have you always wanted to do, but been afraid to attempt?

This question helps you see more clearly where your fears could be blocking you from doing what you really want to do.

Question Number Six: What do you most enjoy doing? What gives you your greatest feeling of self-esteem and personal satisfaction?

This is another values question that may indicate where you should explore to find your "heart's desire." You will always be most happy doing what you most love to do, and what you most love to do is invariably the activity that makes you feel the most alive and fulfilled. The most successful men and women in America are invariably doing what they really enjoy, most of the time.

Question Number Seven: What one great thing would you dare to dream if you knew you would not fail?

Imagine that a genie appears and grants you one wish. The genie guarantees that you will be absolutely, completely successful in any one thing that you attempt to do, big or small, short or long-term. If you were absolutely guaranteed success in any one thing, what one exciting goal would you set for yourself?

Action Exercise: Study the pad of paper that you used to answer these questions. This paper represents your future goals. Look at what you wrote every day and shape your life the way you see it on that paper.

Today i was addresing a group of "future engineers" and i posed this question. "how many of you want to die tomorrow? "
there was pin drop[ silence... well.. who would want to die the next day? Especially a batch of youngsters nearing the age of 18?
then, the next big question.. "If you are ready to live long, then why not do it in the best possible way?"

Yes , dear friends.. this precisely tells you the need for Self development initiatives. The world is colourful and changing and you want to live happily right? So..common ..gear up..Do something TODAY..that will help change your TOMORROW...

What's that one thing which you really wanted to do and has been postponing it? GO and DO it ...

How can i change?

Recently one of my friends asked me ,"how can i change?"

i was actually telling her to change her ways of dealing with day to day problems. she usually has a fight with her husband on petty things and then gets irritated even with her children.

i told her , to take things in a positive way.

She said,"giving advice is easier,tell me how can i change?"

I have been pondering over this for the past many days...

a few ideas which has struck me is as follows

1. Positive thinking is a habit. Try to put in positive interpretations to other person's behaviour. for eg: if your husband comes late, think that "may be he is struck in a traffic" and not as "is he having fun with a female collegue?"

2. Ignore : Yes, this one technique is very good if your husband has also a problem of nagging. soemtimes, your husband as well as your children may be shouting at you for no reasons... in such situations , its better to ignore and continue with your work. But usually , women tend to respond immediately, and thus the quarrel continues.

3. Decide that you have to change: This is infact the first and formost requirement. This decision has to come from your side , that it is "you" who has to change. Once that occurs, remaining is easier.

Well.. some more ideas are coming in to my mind...i will write it in my next blog.

Ready with your New Year Resolution?

A new morning , a new day, Yes , the sun rises as usual..But what makes the day special? Hey,Its a new year!..

A new year brings with it lots of hope and happiness along with it.Its a day when we feel that we are born fresh and that our life has something new to face ahead.

Its at this time that many people think of new year resolutions probably,because it will help them set a date for starting their wish.But the question is how many will be able to sustain their resolution till the end of the year??

Sustaining a resolution requires sheer willpower and a strong motivation.

Here are some tips I would suggest before you finalise your resolutions and stick to them
1.Keep it short and simple.Some people make a big list of wishes and ultimately nothing fruitful happens. I would suggest you to identfy a maximum of three resolutions this year.

2. Choose a positive habit that you have to cultivate (eg:"Increase appreciating others")

3. Choose a negative habit that you have to curb (eg:"decrease procrastination")

4. Be realistic and practical when you set goals.For eg:saying that "I will stop eating Nonveg this year is not practical if you were eating it everyday. Instead ,"I will eat non veg only on sundays "is more practical , as you are also reducing intake but at the same time having an allowance of eating on sunday ,whereby you won't feel any "Withdrawal syndrome" .otherwise you may end up eating NV just at the sight of it, even by the end of January!

5.Convey your resolutions to your near and dear , so that they may also act accordingly.

6.you can also write down your goals in a poster and hang it in your room

7. See that you do not break your resolution for any reason .Refrain from any situation /activity which will revert the resolution.

8.Appreciate yourself.Whenever you stick to your resolution , talk to yourself and appreciate yourself for the good job.This will give you motivation for further sustaining ofthe resolution.

So,Those were some small tips for setting your new year resolutions...Think well and arrive at a single or as i said maximum of three resolutions .

New year is just another day for some people.But you can make it special .You can make it great ,by understanding yourself first and taking some strong resolutions which will transform your life and future!

Wishing you all the very best in your resolution setting ,
HAPPY NEW YEAR!

"A story of a tiny frog"

Once upon a time there was a bunch of tiny frogs.... who arranged a running competition.

The goal was to reach the top of a very high tower. A big crowd had gathered around the tower to see the race and cheer on the contestants. ...

The race began....

Honestly: No one in crowd really believed that the tiny frogs would reach the top of the tower.

You heard statements such as:

"Oh, WAY too difficult!!"

"They will NEVER make it to the top."

"Not a chance that they will succeed. The tower is too high!"

The tiny frogs began collapsing. One by one.... Except for those, who in a fresh tempo, were climbing higher and higher....
The crowd continued to yell, "It is too difficult!!! No one will make it!"

More tiny frogs got tired and gave up.... But ONE continued higher and higher and higher.... This one wouldn't give up!
At the end everyone else had given up climbing the tower. Except for the one tiny frog who, after a big effort, was the only one who reached the top! THEN all of the other tiny frogs naturally wanted to know how this one frog managed to do it?A contestant asked the tiny frog how he had found the strength to succeed and reach the goal? It turned out....

That the winner was DEAF!!!!

The wisdom of this story is: Never listen to other people's tendencies to be negative or pessimistic.... because they take your most wonderful dreams and wishes away from you -- the ones you have in your heart!

Always think of the power words have because everything you hear speak and read will influence your actions!

Therefore: ALWAYS be.... POSITIVE! And above all: Be DEAF when people tell YOU that you cannot fulfill your dreams!

Always have a 'Can-Do' attitude!

1. The word "incorrectly."
2. 1:45. The man gave away a total of 25 cents. He divided it between two people. Therefore, he gave a quarter to two.
3. None, the boat rises with the tide. Googly
4. White. If all the walls face south, the house is at the North pole, and the bear, therefore, is a polar bear.
5. Three. Well, it seems that it could almost be either, but if you follow the mathematical orders of operation, division is performed before addition. So... half of two is one. Then add two, and the answer is three.
6. Sloppy is a (gold)fish. The wind blew the shutters in, which knocked his goldfish-bowl off the table, and it broke, killing him.
7. None. No matter how big a hole is, it's still a hole: the absence of dirt.
8. Both questions, same answer: the ball in the bucket of 45 degree F water hits the bottom of the bucket last. Did you think that the water in the 30 degree F bucket is frozen? Think again. The question said nothing about that bucket having anything in it. Therefore, there is no water (or ice) to slow the ball down...
9. The time and month/date/year American style calendar are 12:34, 5/6/78.
10. One. If he combines all of his haystacks, they all become one big stack.
11. The temperature.

Non verbal behaviour in interviews

hi there!

Recently I read an article related to non verbal behaviour exhibited during interviews... I found it so interesting and relevant that i thought about posting certain excerpts of it here. Hope you would enjoy !

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~```
The applicant’s nonverbal behavior can also have a surprisingly large impact on his or her rating. In one study, 52 HR specialists watched videotaped job interviews in which the applicants’ verbal content was identical, but their nonverbal behavior differed markedly. Researchers told those in one group to exhibit minimal eye contact, a low energy level, and low voice modulation. Those in a second group demonstrated the opposite behavior of the 26 personnel specialists who saw the high-eye-contact, high energy level candidates, 23 would have invited him or her for a second interview. None who saw the low-eye-contact, low-energy-level candidate would have recommended a second interview. It certainly seems to pay for interviewees to “look alive”
In another study, interviewers listened to audio interviews and watched video interviews. Vocal cues (such as the interviewee’s pitch, speech rates, and pauses) and visual cues (such as physical attractiveness, smile and body orientations) correlated with the evaluator’s judgment of whether or not the interviewees could be liked and trusted and where credible.
Why are the candidates’ nonverbal behaviors so important? Perhaps because, accurately or not, interviewers infer the interviewee’s personality from the way he or she acts in the interview. In one study, 99 graduating college seniors completed questionnaires both before and after their job interviews; the questionnaires included measures of personality among other things. They then reported their success in generating follow-up job interviews and job offers.
The interviewee’s personality, particularly his or her level of extraversion had a pronounced influence on whether or not he or she received follow up interviews and job offers. In part, this seems to be because interviewers draw inferences about the applicant’s personality based on the applicant’s behavior during the interview. Extraverted applicants seem particularly prone to self-promotion, and self-promotion is strongly related to the interviewer’s perceptions of candidate job fit.
Of course, clever interviewers take advantages of this, by managing the impressions they present. One study found some used ingratiation to persuade interviewers to like them, for instance by praising them or appearing to agree with their opinions. Others used self-promotion tactics for instance by making complimentary comments about their own accomplishments.
It’s true that applicant behaviors that seem to reflect extraversion and conscientiousness probably do translate into higher ratings, it’s not clear that clear those such findings always apply in real world settings. The problem is that much of the interviewing research uses students as raters and hypothetical jobs, so it’s not clear that we can apply the findings to the real world. For example, “In operational settings, where actual jobs are at stake, faking or socially desirable responding may be more likely to distort personality measurement and obscure relationships.
Interviewer Behavior:
The interviewer’s behavior also has an effect on the interviewee’s performance and rating. For example, some interviews inadvertently telegraph the expected answers, as in: This job calls for handling a lot of stress. You can do that can’t you? Telegraphing isn’t always so obvious. For example, subtle cues (like a smile or nod) can telegraph the desired answer. Some interviewers talk so much applicants have no time to answer questions. At the other extreme, some interviewers let the applicant dominate the interview, and so don’t ask all their questions. Neither is a good situation. Similarly when interviewers have favorable pre-interview impressions of the applicant, they tend to act more positively toward that person (smiling more, for instance), possibly because they want to increase the chance that the applicant will accept the job.
Other interviewers play district attorney or psychologists. It’s smart to be alert for inconsistencies, but uncivil to play “gotcha” by gleefully pouncing on them. Some interviewers play amateur psychologists, unprofessionally probing for hidden meanings in everything the applicants say.
The demographic similarity between interviewers and applicants may also have a small effect on how interviewers rate applicants. For example, a perceived similarity in attitudes may influence how the interviewer rates the applicant’s competence. —
WINNING IN GROUP DISCUSSIONS
Group Discussions (GD) are conducted by many companies as part of their recruitment and in fact one of the most important tool for elimination of a major number of candidates, thus narrowing their selection procedure.
Thus, it has immerged as a very important technique in campus recruitments where a large number of students participate for a single vacancy. Not just campus recruitments, GDs are infact a part of our day to day life. We may have a group discussion in our social life, official life and even in our family life .In all these areas, we can be effective only if we are able to express what we want to , in the right way. For this, you need to hone your GD skills.
GD skills become more relevant in case of campus recruitments for jobs. Here you are actually competing amongst your own classmates and how you perform in this process actually decides your selection or rejection. I know this aspect sends an electric shock across your nerves and you start shivering, right?
Well, friends, the happiest fact is that GD skills can be actually learnt! And that learning can occur only through continuous practice and self effort, of course along with a right mentor or trainer who can help you correct your mistakes at the right points!
Remember that GD is considered as an elimination tool and not as a selection tool:- this means , only if you perform well , you will be selected into the next round .So it actually means –Do or Die ! You may or may not get a second chance to prove your mettle .So make the best use of it now.
In a GD, the judges actually make stages of elimination based on the following aspects
· Whether the candidate is speaking or not – whether the candidate actually speaks up or remains silent – assessing the communication skills
· If speaking –what is he speaking about ? Is it relevant and to the topic? and his /her knowledge level in this topic –assessing the knowledge
· The way he communicates it – the body language , attitude and interest shown by the candidate- assessing the behavior and interpersonal styles, leadership styles.
So , only if the judges are convinced that you are good at all the above three aspects , you will get selected
TIPS to become winners in GD everytime and anytime!
Before taking part in a GD
Keep yourself updated on latest news, happenings, and general knowledge, read the daily newspaper.
Discuss amongst your friends about the day’s important news and facts
Dress for the occasion .Be professional and appear confident
Carry a notepad and pen
Relax and envision yourself as being successful
While Taking part in a GD
When you are speaking for the first time in the group , introduce yourself by giving your name and the institution you are representing
Speak to the group and not looking at the invigilators.
Smile and be confident
Ensure you have proper body language
i. lean forward and show interest
ii. avoid unnecessary facial expressions and gesture
iii. use hand gestures carefully
iv. Do not stand up or make aggressive moves towards the others until the GD is over.
Make note of the points discussed when the other person is speaking and then give your viewpoints rather than disrupting when the other person is speaking
Speak loudly and clearly so that each member can listen to you.
Do not shout or become aggressive towards the other members
See that you do not go astray from the topic
If the invigilators give any special instructions, follow it carefully.
If you are following a “round robin” method, follow it rather than jumping the queue
If you have any objection to any point , handle it carefully
Obey the instructions of the leader (if any)
Concluding the GD
The GD should be concluded by one or two members of the group. (in some cases, the recruiters may ask one person to come forward and make a presentation on the same)
All the major points and viewpoints discussed in the GD can be given as a conclusion (it is for this , that the written points will be helpful)
Even though you may sometimes feel that, you have not completed your discussions, it is ideal that you do not continue your discussion once the invigilator asks you to stop your discussion.
After the GD
After the GD ,thank each member for their participation and shake hands with them and leave the room
Do not continue your discussion outside and lead to arguments
Maintain your professionalism and wait for further instructions from the recruiters
Selection or Rejection
If you follow the above points, you can get through the GD in most of the cases. As I said earlier, the ultimate objective of conducting a GD is to know the communication skills and to a certain extent the interpersonal skills of the participant. So, if you are successful in communicating well , you are sure to pass this test.
But in case, you are being rejected, don’t feel upset. Take it as a learning opportunity, analyse your mistakes and make corrections for future. Moreover, GD skills can be learnt and polished by continuous rigorous practice only. Make a support group of your friends who are interested in GDs (include one or two successful members also) and conduct GDs regularly. After the GD, discuss each others plus and minus points. Give and get feedback immediately after each performance. Keep trying until you succeed!
All the very best for your success!
